Canada Child Benefit 2025–26: CRA Confirms New Higher Payments

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced an increase in the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) for the 2025–2026 payment cycle, giving families a welcome financial boost to cope with rising living costs. The CCB, which is a tax-free monthly payment, aims to support parents in covering the expenses of raising children under the age of 18.

Higher Benefit Rates for Families

From July 2025, the maximum annual benefit will rise, with eligible families receiving more per child. For children under six, the benefit will increase to $7,637 per year, while families with children aged six to seventeen will receive up to $6,460 annually. This adjustment reflects inflation and ensures that the CCB continues to keep pace with the cost of living.

Child’s AgeMaximum Annual Amount (2025–26)Monthly Equivalent
Under 6$7,637$636.41
6 to 17$6,460$538.33

These payments are calculated based on family net income, with higher-income households receiving reduced amounts. The full benefit is available only to families under the income threshold set by the CRA.

Payment Schedule for 2025–2026

The CRA will continue to issue CCB payments on the 20th of each month, except when the date falls on a weekend or public holiday, in which case payments will be made on the preceding business day. The 2025–2026 payment dates are July 18, August 20, September 19, October 20, November 20, December 19, January 20, February 20, March 20, April 18, May 20, and June 20.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the CCB, you must meet certain criteria. You must be the primary caregiver of the child and reside with them. You or your spouse/partner must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the past 18 months. Additionally, you must file your income tax return annually, as eligibility and payment amounts are calculated based on your previous year’s tax information.

How to Apply

Families who are new parents or recent residents of Canada can apply for the CCB online through their CRA My Account or by submitting Form RC66, Canada Child Benefits Application. Those already receiving the benefit do not need to reapply, as the CRA will automatically adjust the payment based on their latest tax return.

A Timely Financial Relief

The increase in the CCB for 2025–2026 comes at a time when many families are feeling the strain of higher grocery prices, housing costs, and other essential expenses. By boosting the payment amounts, the CRA aims to ease financial pressure and ensure that children across Canada have the support they need for a healthy start in life.
